Over the past six months, I have spent the majority of my days in nature. I was lucky enough to spend all of first semester exploring the mountains and canyons of Utah and Colorado, and found myself constantly inspired by the natural rock formations that I was surrounded by. For this project, I aimed to capture the same detail and intricacies of the rocks I found in a mixed media project. I captured rocks throughout the Red Rocks State Park in Malibu with photography, then transferred those images into two hand punched rugs. These two pieces are representative of the process of Lithification, the process or processes by which unconsolidated materials are converted into coherent solid rock, as by compaction or cementation. The woven qualities of the rug are representative of the systems of Lithification and how rocks are created naturally.
