My work is a mixture of classic portraiture and the artificial staging found in theatre and films. Setting up these life-sized dioramas and placing myself in the center was a way for me to display my emotions on a well-lit stage.
This project focuses on the cinematic elements of photography and takes typical portraiture one step forward. I wanted to mix the two art mediums I am most skilled in; photography and film. I love the storytelling aspect of film and this piece was the most time and energy I have ever put into trying to tell a story with my photography. The props in this project might have taken the most time because they were made by my brother’s hands. He has always been an influence on how I approach art and being able to work with him on a project was amazing. His sculptures always give me interesting ideas of what colors and textures I want in my backdrops in film and photography. Making this project not only a combination of photography and film but also sculpture as well. My intent was for the viewer to feel comfortable with their own vulnerability and wanting to feel better about being open to themselves and other people. This is the most exposed state I have put myself in, I did this for the sake of inspiring other artists to be true and raw in their work. Each photo offers a different perspective on a similar story. I tend to always use other people in my work, but due to the pandemic restrictions and my current creative mindset, I thought it was time for me photograph myself and provoke my self image. The outdoor photo is expressive and promotes the beneficial nature of being vulnerable and opening up to others. As an artist, I had a hard time being personal with my art so I wanted to express my newfound confidence.
