When presented with this project's title and prompt, "repair," the first concept that came to mind was repairing the broken systems within our country. A system that first entered my mind that desperately needs repair is the criminal justice and prison systems. In Middle School, I studied what solitary confinement was for a debate in 8th grade. Ever since learning of solitary confinement's horrific treatment and conditions, it has impacted my life and activism. While reading about people's personal experiences in Solitary confinement, I began to grasp some of the feelings that will live with them for the rest of their lives, and incorporated that into my art piece. In a story written by Thomas Barlett Whitaker titled "The War of All Against All," he expresses how inside of solitary, his mind manipulated him into believing he was trapped in a sandstorm and further explains how Whitaker felt as if he lost his soul. In another story written by Cesar Villa titled "Where Cold, Quiet, and Emptiness Come Together," he explains how he felt so cold and almost frozen at particular moments. The quotes included in my artwork are selected from various testimonies from people who have experienced solitary confinement horrors.
