In these unsettling times, like many, I’ve felt out of control in so many aspects of my life. With the closure of schools, restaurants, and other public areas, it’s difficult to find the little joys of life. One of the only places I’ve had complete access to is the beach. Though I’ve always felt a strong connection to the place with the misty air, warm sand, and loud waves, this has only become more relevant during the quarantine. The goal of my series was to give myself complete creative control. I’ve been inspired by many artists but someone very significant to this project is Hiroshi Sugimoto. Sugimoto published a beautiful book solely dedicated to seascapes. Each image is incredibly linear and precise. I wanted to figure out how to incorporate similar attributes to my project. Over the course of 2 weeks, I went to a specific spot off the side of PCH to document life at the beach. I brought a tape measure to line up every angle the same way. This project resulted in so many different photos, that I almost had a full 24 hours worth of documentation. While from the outside it sounds like this project is all about control, it also revolves around an aspect of being out of control. The ocean is extremely unpredictable so each day involved different variables and new challenges.
